2024 Summer Kids & Youth Volunteer Program

Charles, 16 years old

“One of the things I enjoyed while volunteering was visiting different local businesses. I really respect them for donating food to avoid waste. I got my learner's license as well, which allowed me to drive around without having to sit in the passenger seat. I am happy that I can use my driving skills to help. When I went around the city, I realized that we need more food to support the many people in need in Greater Vancouver. I even have an idea! I will be spreading the word to everyone to donate food in our Chinese community, especially Chinese restaurants.”

Elise, 16 years old

“My experience so far volunteering for Vancouver Food Runners has been great! I learned about Vancouver Food Runners through a school food rescue trip, and it inspired me to sign up for the NoFrills food rescue on Wednesday mornings.

I love being able to give back to the community around me and participating in Food Runners makes it so easy to volunteer and make an impact. All of the staff at both NoFrills and the South Van Food Hub are so accommodating and helpful. Something I learned throughout my volunteer journey is that I can positively impact so many lives with just some small action steps. I will try to fit more food rescues into my schedule and will encourage everyone I know to sign up!“

Chloe, 12 years old

“I truly felt happy helping with VFR alongside my mom and sister. I learned that the small things we do is what makes a difference. I'm sure if everyone just gave a little bit of their time to smile or have a chat with a person in need, the world would be a little bit brighter.”

“I had a great time with Vancouver Food Runners. I enjoyed seeing people smile as we gave them the food. I learned that many people are in need of food and that Vancouver Food Runners is there to help.”

Maddie, 15 years old

“This was my second year of participating in VFR’s Summer Youth Program. I rejoined the program because I had lots of fun last summer! I really enjoyed meeting new people during my food rescues and being able to help my community. Volunteering also gave me a reason to wake up early during the school break. I felt accomplished after every food rescue, and it gave me a good start to my day. I hope I can participate even more next summer, as I will finally be able to drive!”

“I enjoyed spending time with my family on the weekly runs because it gave us an opportunity to talk while helping out in the community. These experiences are amazing, and being able to do them together is even better. Throughout the program, I continued to gain knowledge about food recovery and the efforts and contributions that VFR is making to limit food waste and break the cycle of food insecurity.”
