Mona Shad

VFR: Mona, you've done over 123 food rescues since you started volunteering with VFR in September 2022. This is a remarkable commitment to supporting the community and the environment. What initially interested you in volunteering with VFR? And what keeps you volunteering with us?

Mona Shad: For me, joining VFR was a decision made due to COVID-19. Food security has always been an issue, even before the pandemic, and the situation took a turn for the worse over the last few years. With food costs rising, putting bread on the table was becoming more of a struggle for people each day, so it felt natural to try and help and give back to the community. Just knowing we're able to make a difference in someone's life gives me reason to keep helping and volunteering with VFR.

VFR: What has surprised you the most about volunteering with VFR? What have you learned through this process?

MS: What surprised me the most was just how much food waste occurs on a day-to-day basis without an official and dedicated system for our grocery stores to address this situation. There is a need for policies around this. The wastefulness of our economy, and from our people, is what hurts and shocks me the most. I believe volunteering at VFR, or offering a helping hand at food banks and shelters, are small steps in the right direction to battling wastefulness, food scarcity, and poverty. But, really, poverty is a big challenge and requires ‘big picture’ solutions.

VFR: What are some of your favourite volunteer “moments” with VFR?

MS: My favourite and most memorable moments with VFR are when I reach the nonprofit site and the clients who access the food program all jump in to help out. They support with carrying boxes, opening doors, and lending a hand to assist me with deliveries. Their appreciation shines brightly and reflects their gratitude for the support they receive. It warms my heart deeply to know we're making a difference in this small way.

VFR: What are some of your favourite things to do in BC during the summer? And your favourite places to grab a bite to eat in the city?

MS: My favourite activities to do during the summer are spending time with my family going sightseeing and on road trips. That, and taking our dog on new and interesting walks he's never been on before! For places to eat, I really enjoy Grab-n-Go for some Persian food, or Haida Sandwich when I'm craving a taste of home —both located just along mid-Lonsdale in North Vancouver. Kypriaki's is my go-to for delicious Greek meals, and Jack Lonsdale’s for a fun and casual evening out!
