Jim Piggot, Vancouver Food Runners Volunteer

VFR: Tell us about yourself and how you got involved with Vancouver Food Runners.

Jim Pigott: I am a retired Industrial Engineer and Management Consultant, so I have time to focus my energies on volunteerism. I am on the Boards of the Northwest Wildlife Preservation Society and a major federal political party. When I heard about VFR, I was immediately impressed with its objectives and signed up right away to help those who have the excess food get it to those who need the donations.

What makes volunteering with Vancouver Food Runners special and why is it important to you?

To state the obvious, VFR drivers are saving tonnes of good food that would otherwise go to recycle bins. Countless meals are prepared using donated good food that would otherwise go to waste.

Which food run is your favourite?

The produce warehouses, since they often have pallets full of food to donate, and I have a classic old Volvo station wagon with huge capacity. It has been filled to the brim on several occasions.

What has been your best volunteer "moment" so far?

There are many, but a great memory is arriving at CityReach Care Society with a full carload. To see so many of their volunteers preparing handouts for their clients, and to experience their gratitude and be so well appreciated for what I delivered to them, was heartwarming.

Would you recommend volunteering with Vancouver Food Runners to others and why?

Of course, for those who have the time and the appropriate vehicle, as a way to give to some charities and saving the planet a bit - food eaten, not composted. Also, during the lockdown, this is an opportunity to get out for a while, with a purpose.
