VFR: Tell us about yourself and how you got involved with Vancouver Food Runners.

Azizah Rajwani: I’ve been a stay-at-home mum since my kids were born, but now that they’re older, I have more time to myself, and I was looking for inspiration on finding fresh purpose. One quick search and an internet rabbit hole later, I stumbled upon Vancouver Food Runners, and I’m so glad I did!

VFR: What makes volunteering with Vancouver Food Runners special and why is it important to you?

AR: I absolutely love the Vancouver Food Runners causes of both reducing food waste and helping to feed the hungry. It’s a win-win. I was born and raised in Kenya, where so many people live in poverty, and wastefulness is frowned upon. It has always bothered me to see the amount of waste over here, and it means so much to me to finally be able to do something about it.

VFR: Which food run is your favourite?

AR: The one from the Langara YMCA to South Van Neighbourhood House. It’s close to where I live, parking is not an issue, Miluska (the lady who works there) has a wonderful energy, and my car is always filled to the brim with boxes of food.

VFR: What has been your best volunteer "moment" so far?

AR: A few weeks after I started a weekly food run, the lady recognized me and went to get the food donation as soon as I walked in! It felt good to be a familiar face.

VFR: Would you recommend volunteering with Vancouver Food Runners to others and why?

AR: Definitely! I have gotten to meet some wonderful people on my food runs, I’m constantly reminded to be grateful for everything I have, and nothing beats being able to make somebody’s day a little bit brighter. Thank you, Vancouver Food Runners!
