Ruby and Sandra Harris

VFR: How did you get involved with Vancouver Food Runners?

Sandra: I had been looking for a way for Ruby and I to volunteer. There aren’t many volunteer opportunities for teens. We’d already been helping with, and donating to, Backpack Buddies, so we were aware of food insecurity in Vancouver. I think I found out about Vancouver Food Runners via Google or maybe social media. It was easy to sign up and get started.

VFR: What makes volunteering with Vancouver Food Runners special and why is it important to you?

Sandra: Unless you have a specific skill needed by a particular charity, there are virtually no opportunities to get involved on the front lines. Some charities try their best by creating “events” where donors can maybe do something. Vancouver Food Runners is unique in that you can help directly every time. I have a car and the time, and they have food that needs to go from A to B: perfect solution!

It’s also a great introduction to many agencies doing fabulous work in Vancouver. It’s opened up many conversations between Ruby and I as we research what each “destination” does to help people in Vancouver.

Ruby: It’s a cause that I’ve always been passionate about and that isn’t going to go away on its own.

Which food run is your favourite?

Ruby: The South Vancouver Food Hub to Peace Church. When you load and unload there’s always a community of people to help.

Sandra: It’s hard to choose! I do the South Vancouver Food Hub to Peace Church every Thursday and am getting to know everyone there. That delivery runs like clockwork with lots of help at both ends. I also enjoy the Coho Commissary to YWCA or Directions Youth Services.

Anything in the DTES or Strathcona neighbourhood area is great as my late mother-in-law grew up in Strathcona and my late father-in-law had a scrap metal business in the DTES. I feel connected to them as I get to know my way around.

What has been your best volunteer "moment" so far?

Sandra: Nothing stands out in particular. Overall it’s always a good experience. People at both ends are helpful and appreciate Vancouver Food Runners.

Would you recommend volunteering with Vancouver Food Runners to others and why?

Sandra: I have recommended it to many friends! It’s easy to do, you’re making an impact, and you can do as much or as little as you have time for. The app makes it foolproof from choosing a food rescue, and then to picking up and delivering the food. On the very rare occasion that there’s a hiccup, the staff at VFR head office are right there to help sort things out. Just seamless.

Ruby: Yes! It’s easy, doesn’t take much time out of your day, and is a great way to get involved in helping solve food insecurity in Vancouver.
