Why Volunteer?

As a Vancouver Food Runners volunteer, you’ll help connect surplus food with local community organizations, increasing their capacity to serve those in need. Your time and effort not only reduce food waste but also strengthens the impact of nonprofit partners in your community.

Volunteering Made Easy

Watch our step-by-step tutorial on how to claim your first food rescue.

With the Vancouver Food Runners app, you can volunteer as much or as little as you’d like. You can claim a recurring food rescue that allows you to volunteer every week at the same time, or you can claim a one-time food rescue that suits your schedule.

Going away? No problem! Through the VFR app, you can easily request a substitute driver.

Volunteer Spotlight

One of my most memorable moments was delivering food to the Sisters’ Tent on Powell Street one Friday morning, with an SUV full of food from Safeway. As they were unloading the donation, one of the program managers turned to another woman who was helping to unload and said, “Look Mary, you’re going to be able to eat this weekend!” It really hit home how much of a difference we’re making.

I find it deeply meaningful when I see the places where I drop off the food – whether it's a seniors' centre, a community fridge, a women's shelter, or the Downtown Eastside. I appreciate that I can use the VFR app to pick any food rescue I want, and it shows me exactly which nonprofit I will be delivering the food to.

With food costs rising, putting bread on the table was becoming more of a struggle for people each day, so it felt natural to try and help and give back to the community. Just knowing we're able to make a difference in someone's life gives me reason to keep helping and volunteering with VFR.

Volunteer Spotlight

Many of the VFR partners are in close proximity to our home. There is nothing more impactful than seeing the fruits of our contribution near where we live, work, and frequent. Knowing that our efforts have an immediate and tangible impact on our neighbours and the satisfaction we get after each rescue is what keeps us going.

The little app on my phone makes it all so easy, and most of my rescues take less than an hour. It really makes me feel like that hour is a great investment of my time, when I see the appreciation on the faces of the people I interact with – both the ones making the food donations as well as those receiving them.

I enjoy this volunteer initiative so much that I plan to introduce VFR to other people in my life, such other family members, and peers outside of my school community, like those in the Scout group that I attend.
